Demolition of Solar, Serena and Sunrise Court

This project was part of the first phase of Havering Council’s 12 Estates joint venture project with Wates Residential. The site consisted of three blocks which provided sheltered accommodation. The site is being redeveloped into a modern retirement village providing 172 apartments.

Following a successful tender, we secured these Demolition works in Havering, and our full scope of works included

  • Site set up
  • Hoarding
  • Asbestos removal
  • Soft strip
  • Demolition of the three buildings including slab and foundations
  • Crushing of arisings to certified 6F2
  • Reduced level dig
  • Install pile mat and provide plate tests

The demolition works in Havering was located in a residential area with one road in for access. All three buildings were two storeys. The site was close to two tower blocks and residential properties adjacent to the site.

Scaffold screens used to protect the residential properties close to the boundary. These were erected by Downwell Group company Inner City Scaffolding.

The asbestos surveys supplied showed substantial amounts of asbestos throughout the site. Inner City Environmental  carried out these works as part of the Downwell Group under controlled conditions.

The works included

  • The removal of textured coatings to the flats and communal stair wells
  • Removal of floor tiles and bitumen,
  • Asbestos cement flue pipes to the roof areas
  • Paper lining to heating pipes
  • AIB header panels,  floor ducts, riser panels to bathrooms
  • Thermal insulation debris to the walls of the boiler room
  • Thermal insulation/cement debris to soils.

Standard reach excavators from extensive plant fleet out The demolition work was carried out using standard reach excavators using low noise generating attachments. Dust suppression and noise monitoring were in operation at all times.

Hard standing materials were crushed to 6F2, certified and left on site for use in the construction of pile mats.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Statement - Wednesday 25th March

The Prime Minister’s announcement on Monday evening signalled the introduction of more stringent restrictions on us all and has specifically indicated that members of the public should only leave their home for very limited purposes. The message indicates that we should travel to and from work, only where this is absolutely necessary.

The management of the Downwell Group of companies which includes: Downwell Demolition, Inner City Environmental and Inner City Scaffolding has very carefully considered both the meaning and the spirit of the Prime Minister’s statement and whilst there has been some clarification from government subsequently that building sites could continue to operate, we came to the very clear decision yesterday that it was necessary for us, as a responsible contractor, to safely and securely close down our operational sites as soon as reasonably possible. Doing so will assist in maintaining the wellbeing of our customers, employees, sub-contractors, suppliers and the wider communities within which we build.

All sites have been closed down in a safe and secure manner and will remain closed until further notice.

We would like to take this opportunity of thanking all the key workers on the frontline who are continiung working for the good of us all.
